How to type Spanish
accents on any device

Copy each Spanish character with one tap, then choose the instructions for Apple Keyboard, Gboard, SwiftKey, Mac, Windows, or Chromebook.

Copy Spanish accents and symbols

Tap one character to copy it. Each button copies only the character shown, so the board stays easy to use with one thumb on a phone.

Lowercase and punctuation

Uppercase

Choose a character to copy.

Looking for one specific letter?Spanish o with an accent is ó. Spanish u with an accent is ú.

Which keyboard are you using?

The phone model does not determine the steps—the active keyboard and language layout do. Choose the keyboard you actually see when you type.

Fast recommendation
  • Most iPhone users: Apple’s built-in Spanish keyboard.
  • Chinese + English + Spanish: Gboard with Spanish enabled.
  • Two-language prediction: SwiftKey with Spanish enabled.
  • One occasional character: use the copy board above.
Apple Keyboard on iPhoneRecommended for most iPhone users
  1. Open Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards.
  2. Tap Add New Keyboard, then choose Spanish.
  3. While typing, touch and hold the globe key and choose Spanish.
  4. Use the visible ñ key. Press and hold a vowel when you need á, é, í, ó, ú, or ü.

No additional app is required.

Gboard on iPhone or AndroidBest for Chinese + English + Spanish
  1. Open Gboard settings and choose Languages → Add language.
  2. Add a Spanish layout instead of relying only on an English or Chinese layout.
  3. Switch languages with the globe or language key. Gboard for iPhone supports up to three active languages.

Choose this when you regularly move among Chinese, English, and Spanish.

Microsoft SwiftKeyGood for two-language prediction
  1. Open SwiftKey and select Languages.
  2. Download and enable Spanish.
  3. Use the Spanish layout for ñ and written accents.

SwiftKey on iPhone supports two active languages, so it fits Chinese + Spanish better than a three-language setup.

Another or Chinese-first keyboardLong-press support varies

Some Chinese-first and manufacturer keyboards expose accents when you press and hold a Latin letter; others do not show every Spanish character or Spanish spelling suggestions.

If ó, ú, ü, or ñ is missing, use the copy board above or add a Spanish layout in Apple Keyboard, Gboard, or SwiftKey. The page should not assume that every mobile keyboard behaves the same way.

Physical keyboard shortcuts

Mac

  • á é í ó ú: press Option + E, release, then type the vowel.
  • ñ: press Option + N, release, then type N.
  • ü: press Option + U, release, then type U.
  • ¿ / ¡: press Option + Shift + ?, or Option + 1.

Windows

With the United States-International keyboard enabled:

  • á é í ó ú: press ', then the vowel.
  • ñ: press ~, then N.
  • ü: press ", then U.

The Spanish keyboard also provides a dedicated ñ key and an accent key before the vowel.

Chromebook

Add the US International keyboard in input settings. Then use ' before a vowel for á, é, í, ó, ú; ~ before N for ñ; and " before U for ü.

What do ó, ú, ü, and ñ mean?

óo with an acute accent, as in canción
úu with an acute accent, as in música
üshows that u is pronounced in güe or güi, as in pingüino
ña separate Spanish letter, as in mañana

Written accents can mark stress or distinguish words that otherwise look alike. For example, tu means “your,” while tú means “you”; si means “if,” while sí means “yes” or “oneself,” depending on context.
